Starship Noble

A few weeks ago I bought a short story from a great neo pulp writer named Bobby Nash about a starship that encounters an "alien" adrift in space in nothing but a stark, white spacesuit. The story, Samaritan, was a great read with a nice twist at the end. I enjoyed it so much that I bought an anthology from Mr. Nash that contained the Samaritan story among other similar space-based stories called Frontier.

I have not got a chance to delve into that anthology yet but reading the Samaritan story stoked my imagination and inspired me to try my hand at sci-fi pulp. I started writing a story about a similar incident, a starship encountering an "alien" adrift in space, and thus Starship Noble was born.

In my story the "alien" was Astronaut Tobias Noble of an Earth in our not too distant future. Noble and his two other fellow astronauts were on a routine mission to explore Jupiter but encountered a malfunction aboard their spacecraft. The error caused their ship to hurl beyond our solar system. Written off for dead, and they should have been except their craft wanders into a wormhole where they traveled to an unknown area of space.

Running low on life support and hope, Noble volunteers to do a space walk to repair an exterior conduit that was the source of their malfunction. During his endeavor he becomes separated from the ship. Afloat through space in nothing but his spacesuit, he panics, thrashing and screaming about. He blacks out for an unknown period of time only to be stumbled upon by a starship that happened to be passing by.

Noble is rescued by the crew of the starship and has to come to grips with being the only human aboard a ship full of "aliens" as he struggles to piece together what happened to him. His singular goal becomes how to find a way back to Earth but he encounters wonders and women that make him rethink his need to return to his old life.
